Breakfast kolaches are the perfect grab-and-go meal for busy mornings. Our family recipe uses a bread machine for easy dough preparation, and you can customize the filling to your taste. We love stuffing them with savory sausage, melty cheese, and crispy hash browns. Prepare your kolaches the night before and refrigerate them overnight. In the morning, let them reach room temperature while preheating the oven, then bake for a quick, hot breakfast that’s ready in minutes!

Ingredients

Dough :

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 large egg yolk, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • ½ tablespoon salt
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 3 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Filling :

  • 18 2-inch sausages, cut in half
  • 1 (16 ounce) package frozen hash brown potatoes
  • 9 slices Cheddar cheese, each cut into 4 squares

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the Dough: Add milk, egg, egg yolk, butter, flour, salt, sugar, and yeast to your bread machine in the specified order or as directed by your machine’s instructions. Select the Dough cycle and let it run for approximately 1 1/2 hours for perfect dough consistency.

Step 2

After the cycle completes, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a large baking sheet.

Step 3

Punch down the dough on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 36 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart. Let the balls rise for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 4

Flatten each ball and create a small indentation in the center. Fill each with a piece of sausage, about 1 tablespoon of potatoes, and a square of Cheddar cheese.

Step 5

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until lightly browned.
